You have a website. Your business is legitimate. You offer a service people actively search for. Yet when you type the service into Google, your competitors appear and your business is nowhere to be seen.

So, why is my business not showing on Google? For many UK businesses, the problem is not that Google knows nothing about them. Their website may already be indexed, but it could be sitting on page four or five, targeting the wrong searches, struggling with technical SEO or failing to build enough local relevance to compete. That matters because someone searching for a solicitor, roofer, plumber, estate agent or another local service is often much closer to becoming a customer than someone casually browsing social media.

At Avenor, we focus on helping businesses become visible for searches that can actually turn into enquiries. If Google is not bringing you enough business, the first step is finding out why.

1. Google Hasn't Properly Indexed Your Website

Before worrying about rankings, establish whether Google actually knows your important pages exist.

Search Google for:

site:yourwebsite.co.uk

If your website appears, Google has indexed at least some of it. If important service pages are missing, however, you may have an indexing or crawling problem. This can happen because of technical errors, incorrect noindex settings, canonical problems, poor internal linking or simply because Google has not discovered a new page yet.

Google Search Console should therefore be one of the first places you check. Look at which pages are indexed, which are excluded and whether Google is reporting problems with important commercial pages. This is also why publishing more blogs is not always the answer. If the technical foundations of the website are weak, adding another 50 articles may simply create another 50 URLs struggling to perform.

A proper SEO campaign should diagnose these problems before throwing more content at the website. Our SEO services are built around improving the entire search system, from technical foundations and search intent to content and conversion.

2. You Are on Google, Just Too Far Down to Be Seen

This is an important distinction. Your business may technically be showing on Google while being practically invisible to customers.

Imagine you are a roofing company ranking in position 43 for roof repair Birmingham. Google knows your page exists. The problem is that several pages of competitors are sitting above you. That is a ranking problem rather than an indexing problem.

Moving upwards usually requires looking at the complete search result rather than obsessing over a single keyword. Does your page actually answer the intent behind the search? Is your website locally relevant? Do competing businesses have stronger service pages? Are their sites better connected internally? Do they have greater authority?

If Birmingham is an important market for your business, our SEO agency in Birmingham page explains how we approach commercial search visibility rather than chasing rankings that never generate enquiries.

3. Your Website Doesn't Match What Customers Actually Search

This is where a lot of business websites go wrong. A homepage might say:

"Trusted experts providing professional services for over 20 years."

It sounds fine to a human. But what exactly should Google rank that business for?

Suppose you are a roofer in Manchester. Your customers may be searching for roof repair Manchester, emergency roofer Manchester, flat roof repair Manchester, roof replacement Manchester and dozens of similar searches.

Having one generic "Our Services" page may not give Google or the customer enough useful information about each service. The solution isn't keyword stuffing.

It is building your website around genuine search intent. Those searches should not be treated equally. This is the same principle behind our SEO for roofers strategy. The objective is to connect the services a roofing company wants to sell with the searches potential customers make when they actually need those services.

4. Your Google Business Profile Isn't Strong Enough

If you run a local business, ranking your website is only part of the battle. Google Maps and the local results can occupy some of the most valuable space on the search results page.

This is where your Google Business Profile becomes important. Your business category, services, opening hours, reviews, location or service area and overall profile accuracy help Google understand the business. Google explains that local results are primarily based on relevance, distance and prominence. That means simply creating a Google Business Profile does not guarantee that you will appear whenever somebody nearby searches for your service. Your wider local presence matters too.

Your website should reinforce the services and locations represented through your Business Profile. Reviews should be genuine and consistent. Business details should be accurate across the web. This becomes particularly important for companies competing in crowded cities where dozens of businesses may be trying to appear for the same local searches.

5. You're Trying to Rank Everywhere Without Building Local Relevance

Another common mistake is targeting the whole country when the business realistically serves a handful of areas. Consider a plumber based in Leeds. Trying to rank nationally for "plumber" is unlikely to be the most useful objective. The commercially valuable searches may instead be:

  • plumber Leeds

  • emergency plumber Leeds

  • boiler repair Leeds

  • plumber near me

The website should make the relationship between the service and location extremely clear. That can involve strong service pages, useful location pages, relevant internal links, local content and an optimised Google Business Profile. What you should not do is create 150 nearly identical pages where only the town name changes.

If Leeds is one of your priority markets, our Google Ads agency in Leeds page also shows how location and commercial intent can be connected through paid search while organic visibility develops.

6. Your Competitors Have Built More Authority

Sometimes your website isn't doing anything obviously wrong.

Your competitors are simply doing more things right. Suppose five solicitors want to rank for the same high-value legal search.

One firm has a thin 400-word service page. Another has a detailed practice-area page, useful supporting guides, strong internal linking, reputable mentions from other websites, genuine reviews and clear evidence of expertise.

Google has considerably more information available to understand the second firm. This is where topical authority becomes important. If you want to rank for employment law searches, for example, having one employment law page may not be enough in a highly competitive market. You may need useful supporting content around settlement agreements, redundancy, unfair dismissal, workplace discrimination, constructive dismissal and the questions potential clients repeatedly ask.

For law firms specifically, our SEO for solicitors service is structured around practice areas, location and commercial search intent rather than simply increasing website traffic.

7. Technical SEO Is Holding You Back

A beautiful website can still have terrible SEO. Search engines need to be able to crawl the website, discover its important pages and understand how those pages relate to one another. Problems can include incorrect canonical tags, pages accidentally set to noindex, redirect chains, broken internal links, duplicate URLs, poor architecture or important pages buried several clicks deep.

This is particularly common after a website redesign or migration. A business launches a beautiful new website and then notices its Google traffic falling. The redesign may look better while inadvertently changing URLs, removing content or breaking redirects that previously helped Google understand the site. If your rankings suddenly disappeared after a website change, technical SEO should be investigated before you start rewriting every page.

You can see how we approach broader organic growth through our SEO agency in Nottingham service page, where technical foundations form part of the wider search strategy.

8. You're Getting Visibility, But Your Website Isn't Winning the Click or Enquiry

This is the part businesses often overlook. Imagine Search Console shows:

25,000 impressions.

That sounds impressive. But you received 170 clicks and three enquiries. You do not simply have a "traffic" problem anymore. You need to understand what happens between:

Google search → search result → website visit → enquiry.

Your title may not be attractive enough to earn the click. The page may not immediately answer what the visitor searched for. Your calls to action may be weak. There may be no reviews, case studies or proof. The visitor may not understand why they should choose you instead of the four competitors they opened in other tabs. This is why we don't believe SEO should end at rankings.

Our case studies focus on business outcomes because traffic and rankings only become commercially useful when they contribute to leads, customers and revenue.

What Should You Do If Your Business Isn't Showing on Google?

Start with diagnosis, not guesswork. Check whether your website is indexed. Then check the actual queries you're receiving impressions for in Search Console. Look at your average positions. Review your Google Business Profile. Search your most important service and location combinations manually and look at who consistently appears above you.

Then compare those competitors against your own website. If your website is sitting around position 40 for an important keyword, ask why the 39 results above you are currently giving Google stronger signals. Or perhaps your technical SEO is preventing otherwise strong pages from performing. The answer will be different for every business.

Want to Find Out What's Keeping Your Business Off Page One?

If your website is getting impressions but sitting on page three, four or five, publishing random content isn't the answer. You need to understand what is stopping your important pages from competing. Avenor helps UK service businesses identify the search opportunities most likely to produce enquiries and then builds the SEO system around them. If organic SEO is taking time and you also need immediate search visibility, our PPC services can target people already searching for your services while the organic strategy develops.

And if you want to see whether your website has the foundations required to compete, book an SEO audit and we'll look at where your current visibility is being lost.
